Monitoring AI in schools requires more than policy…

Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming part of everyday school life. Pupils are using tools such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini and Claude to help with homework, research, revision and coursework, while teachers are increasingly exploring AI to reduce workload and support lesson planning.

The opportunities are clear, but so are the new responsibilities.

For school leaders, the challenge is no longer deciding whether AI should be allowed in school. The reality is that pupils are already using it, often in ways that are difficult to identify through traditional web filtering alone. That means safeguarding, acceptable use policies and digital strategies all need to evolve alongside the technology.

Looking beyond website access

Historically, schools have focused on monitoring the websites pupils visit. AI changes that model.

A pupil can spend an entire lesson interacting with a single AI platform, asking dozens of questions without ever navigating away from the page. Some conversations may be entirely appropriate and support learning. Others could involve topics such as self-harm, bullying, radicalisation or other safeguarding concerns.

Simply knowing that a pupil visited an AI website is unlikely to provide enough information for safeguarding staff to make an informed decision. Context has become increasingly important, particularly when schools are balancing pupil welfare with privacy and appropriate use of technology.

Supporting professional judgement

Technology should help schools identify concerns, but it should never replace professional judgement.

That’s why many schools are moving away from systems that simply generate alerts towards approaches that provide greater context around online activity. Understanding what was searched, how often similar behaviour has occurred and whether there is an emerging pattern gives Designated Safeguarding Leads much stronger evidence when deciding whether further action is required.

Rather than treating every alert equally, this approach helps schools prioritise incidents that genuinely require immediate attention while reducing unnecessary investigations.

Helping schools monitor AI responsibly

Schools can monitor activity across popular AI platforms, including ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity, helping safeguarding teams understand how these tools are being used on school-managed devices. AI platforms can also be added to restricted website lists where schools choose to limit access during particular lessons or assessments.

When safeguarding concerns are identified, classroom.cloud captures supporting evidence based on the severity of the incident. Depending on the risk level, this may include a text log, screenshots or screen recordings, giving safeguarding staff additional context before deciding on the most appropriate response. Schools can also filter events specifically related to AI activity, making it easier to review concerns linked to generative AI tools.

Preparing for the next stage of AI in education

AI is developing far more quickly than most school policies. Rather than attempting to predict every new platform or capability, many schools are focusing on building flexible approaches that can adapt as technology evolves.

That means reviewing acceptable use policies, supporting staff with appropriate training and ensuring safeguarding processes reflect the ways pupils are now accessing information and interacting online. It also means giving safeguarding teams the visibility they need to understand not only when concerns arise, but also the context behind them.

AI will continue to play an increasing role in education, both inside and outside the classroom. Schools that combine clear policies, informed leadership and appropriate monitoring will be in a much stronger position to support pupils safely while allowing them to benefit from the opportunities AI can bring.
