Last month NetSupport HQ welcomed three work experience students to learn about careers in technology as part of The Employability Partnership’s work experience programme. As a thank you for ‘support and commitment to local students’, NetSupport has been awarded with a certificate of appreciation.

About the work experience at NetSupport

Two of the students primarily worked with our product services and product support teams, to get insights into roles such as a testing analyst and technical support analyst. They completed test cases for our products to learn about our testing processes, what to look for and how to identify and log bugs. They gained experience interacting with the development team to confirm expected product behaviour. They learnt to use their initiative to spot things that maybe didn’t look quite right or work how they expected and to consider user experience when testing a product.  They also reviewed our help files and tested some basic functions.

The other student worked with our cyber security analyst, Asha Zealand, and underwent some cyber awareness training and further research. She used the knowledge she gained to create a cyber awareness quiz for NetSupport staff to complete! The student took part in our daily system checks such as checking quarantine for phishing emails, conducting server room checks and service health. She also took apart and rebuilt a desktop PC and booted it successfully first time!

All three students got a detailed overview of the support job role and the systems we use and why we use them. They also learnt to install their PC from scratch, to load the OS onto this and how to setup a virtual environment. They also visited the marketing team, to learn from our graphic designers about some of their work such as video editing, stand design, social media collateral design etc. and to chat with our social media coordinator and community engagement manager about their roles and some of their daily tasks such as creating and scheduling social posts, editing our online magazine etc. They talked to the team about different roles in marketing and routes into them.

While at NetSupport, the students worked with one of our product services testing analysts, Rachel Edwards, to make their own career plans – thinking about what they would like to do in the future and the skills, qualifications and experience they would need to reach their goals so they could create a career pathway.

It was great to see young people interested in technology careers and we hope they found the experience valuable for helping them consider what they enjoy and want to do next!
